Larry Matthews, Jr.  Lawrence William “Larry” Matthews, Jr., 88, died Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at Plymouth Congregational Church. Larry was elected to the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame in 2009 and was the recipient of the Iowa CPCU Burkhalter Award in 2008.  Link to obituary in the Des Moines Register.
Insurance Dream Team. Insurance Broadcasting in conjunction with the Insurance Media Association has announced the 7th annual list of the "100 Most Powerful People In The Insurance Industry, North America" also referred to as "The Insurance Dream Team."  Dr. Therese "Terri" M. Vaughan, NAIC Chief Executive Officer is on the list.  Dr. Vaughn is a member of our chapter and she was the 2009 recipient of the Burkhalter Award.

Iowa CPCU Chapter – Volunteer Opportunity   Have you heard about the upcoming Anawim Housing project in Des Moines?  The goal is to build nine homes for needy families in just nine days.  The Iowa Chapter of the CPCU Society has already donated funds to purchase smoke detectors for the nine plex housing unit.

Addititionally, our chapter is providing volunteers on Wednesday, September 9th from 2 pm – 6 pm to assist in monitoring on-site safety.  Our tasks might include directing traffic, parking assistance, offering directions and/or providing minor first aid assistance.

Ms. Robinson is the new Consumer Advocate for Insurance. She reviews areas of concern in insurance regulation and consumer complaints. This allows her to assist the insurance commissioner and lawmakers to improve consumer protection and service as it relates to the insurance industry. Ms. Robinson will discuss challenges facing her position and current P/C issues.

CPCU Society of Iowa - Habitat for Humanity Day is August 6, 2009. Openings are still available for volunteers to assist on a Habitat for Humanity project on Thursday, August 6th. WE’RE ‘SPREADING THE WORD!   August Visibility Spotlight Winner ‘ Spreads the Word! ’ on Television

Rose Nwaturuocha, CPCU , public relations chair of the Iowa Chapter, spread the word in May in a very unique way. When the chapter learned about a special morning news segment on a Des Moines TV station promoting local business and community organizations, she prepared a write-up about the chapter, and dropped it off at the station, along with a CPCU Society mug. “On the morning of May 6, 2008, the CPCU Society mug was seen by an estimated 20,000 viewers in the central Iowa broadcast area,” said Nwaturuocha, a product underwriting senior staff specialist at Nationwide Agribusiness Insurance in Des Moines. Read more in the August Visibility Spotlight. In recognition for her “Spread the Word!” efforts, Nwaturuocha will receive a business card holder with the CPCU Society logo.

New Ad Featuring EMC Debuts.  (From the  "Your CPCU Society August 2008 e-LINK") The Society is launching a new ad, featuring Bruce G. Kelley, CPCU, president and CEO of EMC Insurance Companies. In the ad, Kelley notes, “By supporting the CPCU designation program and the CPCU Society, we’re ensuring the success of our employees and our company.” The ad will appear in key trade publications, starting in August. Take me out to the ball game!  The Iowa Chapter of CPCU is hosting an I-Cubs Outing on August 5, 2008 to kick off the 2008-09 Year. This event is for all Iowa Chapter CPCU members, their friends, and families. The Chapter will provide 2 tickets per member. Additional tickets can be purchased at a cost of $5 per ticket. Game time is 7:05 p.m. This will be a group outing for our Chapter and everyone will be seated in the same section.

I-Day 2007. Insurance Industry Day is proclaimed each year to recognize persons who have completed the requirements necessary to attain the CPCU designation, and as a forum to discuss insurance topics of current interest. Participation and attendance is open to anyone. Learn how to identify some of the indications of Workers' Compensation fraud as well as when an investigation may be warranted. General Louis D. Burkhalter, the first president of the Iowa Chapter of the CPCU Society, died July 19, 2007 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  He was 98 years old. Here is a link to his on line memorial.  General Burkhalter was inducted into the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame in 2005.  In 2007 the Iowa Chapter of CPCU announced the creation of the Burkhalter Award to be presented annually to recognize people who have made a contribution to the property and casualty insurance industry and their community through civic involvement.

The Iowa Chapter achieves the Gold Level of the Circle for Excellence Award for the 2006 -2007 chapter year!   The CPCU Society’s Circle of Excellence Recognition Program recognizes each chapter for its efforts to achieve benchmarks in chapter performance.  Chapters can earn Gold, Silver, or Bronze recognition by completing key initiatives of the Society’s strategic plan.

The first Burkhalter Award will be presented this fall to an individual for outstanding achievement and contribution to the insurance industry in Iowa. The award is named after Major General Louis D.  The Fire Safety House at Blank Children's Hospital is a FREE fire safety education program designed to teach children important aspects of fire safety. The Iowa Chapter has been a long-time contributor in the form of volunteer hours and financial contributions.

For the fifth year, proceeds from the annual golf outing will be donated to Farm Safety 4 Just Kids, in conjunction with the efforts of our CPCU Good Works committee.
