CPCU Annual Golf Outing

May 23, 2001

Willow Creek Golf Course

Benefit for Farm Safety 4 Just Kids

For the second year, proceeds from the annual golf outing will be donated to Farm Safety 4 Just kids, in conjunction with the efforts of our CPCU Good Works committee. Farm Safety 4 Just Kids is a very special program that seeks to prevent farm related childhood injuries and fatalities, by providing education about the importance of arm safety.

The golf outing will be a Best Ball tournament, and is open to CPCU’s, those testing for CPCU, as well as other insurance folks. Shotgun start will be at 1:00 p.m.

Here’s an opportunity to show your support for a good cause and have a great time. Whether you’re an accomplished golf pro or have never hit a golf ball before, we’re looking for everyone to get involved.

Several companies have signed up to sponsor a hole; however, we are in need of additional sponsors.

To register for golf, and/or to sponsor a hole, contact Steve Peterson at 276-8521, ext. 13, or e-mail him at stpete@safeco.com. The $55 fee includes 18 holes, a cart, an invitation to the Social hour to follow golf at 5:30, and a donation to Farm Safety 4 Just Kids.

Please note there is a separate registration for the May 23 CPCU dinner meeting and installation of officers. Those reservations go to Dennis Forsythe.  (See registration above for both golf and dinner.)

IOWA CHAPTER CPCU SOCIETY MEETING – February 2001

Date & Time: Thursday, February 15 11:30 a.m.

Location: Izaak Walton League of Des Moines, 4343 Valley Drive, Des Moines

For the past twelve months, Drake University has been undergoing an intense internal Program review. Based on this review and feedback from many constituencies, in January Dr. Maxwell presented his final recommendations to the Drake Board of Trustees, which will consider these recommendations when it meets on February 8 & 9.

Drake University is an institution which has touched many of us – whether we graduated from Drake, took advantage of CPCU and IIA courses offered through the Kelley Insurance Center, or simply sat in Parents Hall for many long exams. For many years, our Chapter has sponsored two annual scholarships for Drake insurance students. Our March educational event is developed jointly with Drake. The direction of Drake University is important to all of us.

Join us to hear Dr. Maxwell describe the future of Drake University, including plans for the insurance major and Kelley Insurance Center.

Topic: Insurance Fraud

Speaker: Steve Sims, CPCU, AIC, AIM, President, IA-NE Chapter International Association of Special Investigation Units

Special guests: Vern Foughty, Special Agent, NICB and

Cindy Nelson, Fraud Bureau Chief, Iowa Insurance Dept.

Date & Time: Thursday, January 18 11:30 a.m.

Our December meeting having been snowed out, our speakers have agreed to present our January luncheon meeting.

Insurance cheats are deadbeats and they cost YOU money! To raise consumer awareness about the magnitude of insurance fraud, the CPCU Society and the National Insurance Crime Bureau have joined forces in a national "Educating Against Insurance Fraud" campaign. This program takes a dynamic look at scams and the people who perpetrate fraud, and provides common sense approaches to keep you from becoming a victim. And – you’ll learn what is being done to fight fraud, and how insurers work with law enforcement agencies and legislators to incarcerate offenders and pass laws aimed at reducing fraud. Steve will share all this – and some interesting stories of his own – at our first meeting of the new millennium.

Please remember to bring a food item for contribution to the Food Bank.

Is global warming a real phenomenon? How might it affect insurance companies? What can be done about it? Answers to these and more questions will be provided by our speaker, our own member Jennie LeGates, CPCU. Currently Training Specialist for marketing and underwriting at Grinnell Mutual, Jennie became interested in global warming while serving as Global Warming Project Coordinator for the Ecumenical Ministries of Iowa.
