The building which houses the gallery is on
the National Register of Historical Places. It was built in 1908 in the
Beaux Arts classical style and served as the main Des Moines Post Office.
Polk County bought the building in 1975 for use as office space and
restored the north lobby in 1980 for the Heritage
Art Gallery, an exhibition space for the visual arts.
The Heritage Art Gallery is located at the corner of 2nd & Walnut in the northwest corner of the Polk County Administration Building at 111 Court Avenue. Enter the gallery from the north or west doors located at 2nd and Walnut. Parking is available in the lot on the south side of the building, the ramp south of the Federal Building (210 Walnut Street), or on the streets (Second, Walnut, First, and Court Streets) surrounding the building. |
